The School of Skilled Trades, a non-profit vocational institution located in Durham, North Carolina, is seeking a Plumbing Instructor to lead practical and interactive training sessions. Our mission is to prepare students for successful careers in plumbing and other skilled trades. This part-time role combines hands-on teaching in a wet lab environment with engaging classroom instruction.
The ideal candidate will be a licensed plumber with a passion for teaching and demonstrable experience in performing and explaining core plumbing tasks. You will help students master skills essential to their trade, ranging from blueprint reading to installing water heaters, faucets, and toilets.
Position Schedule:
● Weekdays, 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
● Opportunities for additional hours teaching specialized courses, such as backflow certification and introductory plumbing for property management teams.
● Orientation in September with class start on September 15, 2025.
Compensation:
● Approximately $45/hour depending on licensure and teaching experience
● Wages are negotiable and based on plumbing and teaching experience.
● Final offer is contingent on approval by the North Carolina Community College Board.
Essential Duties:
● Teach 80% of the class in a hands-on wet lab and 20% in an interactive classroom setting.
● Demonstrate high-quality skills in practical plumbing tasks, including:
● Blueprint reading and plumbing math
● Installation and troubleshooting of water heaters (tank and tankless)
● Faucet, toilet, water heater, tankless water heater, DWV systems, disposals, showers and pipe installations
● Maintain accurate records of student punctuality, attendance, and grades.
● Foster a safe and productive learning environment.
Qualifications:
● Licensed plumber (preferred).
● Previous teaching or training experience is highly preferred.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to effectively explain and demonstrate practical plumbing skills.
● Commitment to maintaining detailed and accurate records.
● Encouraging and patient yet demanding a high standard of excellence from students.
● Emphasis on training students to meet the demands of the profession.
Working Conditions:
● Primarily conducted in a well-equipped, light-filled wet lab and classroom setting.
● Must be comfortable managing both hands-on training and theoretical instruction.
